Dr. Russell B. Clayton

Dr. Russell B. Clayton is the Distinguished and Endowed Provost McKenzie Professor at Florida State University, where he is a Professor in the School of Communication and Director of the Cognition and Emotion Lab. His research is centered on media psychology, health communication, and psychophysiological methods. He is especially interested in evaluating and optimizing persuasive health messages (i.e., drug, alcohol, tobacco, non-tobacco nicotine products) to prevent and reduce substance use in young adults. Dr. Clayton has worked with the Institute for Successful Longevity as a Co-Investigator on the institute’s project, Human Factors Guidelines to Develop Education Tip Cards for Aging Road Users, for the Florida Department of Transportation. Dr. Clayton earned his B.S. in Psychology in 2010 and M.A. in Health Psychology in 2012, both from Texas State University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in 2015.
