ISL Welcomes New Postdoctoral Research Fellow

June 5, 2025

The Institute for Successful Longevity (ISL) is excited to welcome Dr. Daniel Leme as its newest Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Dr. Leme brings a wealth of international experience in gerontology, rehabilitation, and public health, with a distinguished career that spans clinical practice, academic research, and leadership roles across Brazil, Canada, and now the United States.

Dr. Leme is a physiotherapist by training, with clinical expertise in cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, and geriatric rehabilitation. He previously served as a professor in the postgraduate program in gerontology and geriatrics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC) in Brazil. He earned his Ph.D. in Gerontology from the University of Campinas (Unicamp), where his research focused on the social, psychosocial, and clinical determinants of frailty syndrome in older adults.

He recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in public health at the University of Waterloo in Canada. There, he studied the mental and physical health of older adults in acute hospitals and long-term care settings, including the effects of antipsychotics and predictors of delayed hospital discharge. During that time, he also served as a co-investigator on the ICARE4OLD project, an international initiative aimed at improving care for older persons with complex chronic conditions.

Dr. Leme has published extensively in high-impact journals, particularly in the areas of frailty, dynapenia, and sarcopenia. His research leverages advanced statistical methods, including network analysis and machine learning, and draws on data from major studies such as the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA) and the Frailty in Brazilian Older Adults (FIBRA) study.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Daniel Leme join ISL,” said Dr. Zhe He, Director of ISL. “His interdisciplinary expertise and international research background will significantly enrich our work on aging and longevity. We look forward to the contributions he will make to our research community.”

We are proud to welcome Dr. Leme to the ISL team!
